LOVERS OF THE LIGHT

THE SCANDINAVIAN HOME  - INTERIORS INSPIRED BY LIGHT

slowdesign_thescandinavianhome.JPG

Scandinavia is famous for its distinctive style: homes are pared-back and simple, and form and function are combined to create aesthetically pleasing and practical interiors.

Scandinavians are inspired by light, having an abundance of it in summer, but so little of it in winter, and house designs tend to maximize the amount of natural light that enters the home, and allow the inhabitants to make the most of outdoor life during the summer.

OUR MOUNTAIN CABIN

Last autumn I received a surprising, but nevertheless, pleasant request from the interior design blogger and author Niki Brantmark. She wanted to include our cabin in her second book, on Scandinavian Homes. A team of three with the talented photographer James Gardiner,  Niki and their lovely assistant Julie Stewart went from busy London and Malmö, into the Norwegian mountains, to spend a day at our cabin. I am amazed by the result, and so proud to be part of this book with so many wonderful homes and cottages from all over Scandinavia. As I can relate to the book title (inspired by light), I am so happy to see how the photos have managed to capture the crisp light, and (at least for me) awake the same feeling of calmness we get when we are at the cabin.
The other stories in the book are equally beautiful, each with it own unique style.

The Scandinavian Home by Niki Brantmark can be ordered at Amazon, SD Books, and, if you are in Norway; also be purchased on Tanum books at Karl Johan.

"I love the sense of being close to nature, the view from the large windows, and the silence, and feeling of peace... "

"I am passionate about making things, both because I like to explore materials, and because the room has a special energy when it`s filled with personal objects that tell stories."

"It is about enjoying the true beauty around you and finding that beauty in the little things This approach helps me see what I have to hand, and how I can reuse it. To be creative, using your own hands and skills to make the things you need is also a part of it. It not only gives me great pleasure but also makes me awere of the real value of things."
